Spanish police have seized 415,000 cannabis plants worth over PS83m and EUR100m from an illegal farm in the country’s rural Navarre region. The hemp plants were being dried and processed into cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive substance used for medical purposes. The land is spread across 11 fields and covers 67 hectares.
The massive cannabis operation was a botched hemp mega-farm that was destined for processing into CBD products. The farm in Navarre was a sprawling operation with more than four hundred thousand plants and a warehouse containing 50 tonnes of dried plants. The cannabis plants were destined for the Italian and Swiss markets. The police confiscated over 1,600 cannabis plants and arrested three people.
Spanish law forbids the cultivation of cannabis, but hemp for industrial use and textile-making is legal. However, growing hemp for CBD purposes is illegal and can carry a prison sentence of cannabis three to six years. The investigation lasted two years and involved three people. The owners of the plantation claimed the plantation was intended for industrial hemp, not recreational use.
The Spanish authorities have been criticised for this mega-bust, and have questioned the government’s decision to prosecute marijuana growers under gray federal law.
